April Elsbernd joined the University of Dubuque Athletic Department in the Spring of 2009 and is a native of Calmar, Iowa (South Winneshiek High School). She is entering her seventh season with the Spartans.
University of Dubuque Volleyball student-athletes have earned 29 IIAC All-Academic individual honors, accounted for four American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Academic Team awards, and six All-IIAC selections during her seven seasons at the helm of the program.
The Spartans secured their fifth-straight IIAC tournament berth behind Klaudia Basierak's fourth All-IIAC selection and their best record since 2007 (17-18). Basierak became the only Spartan in school history to receive four IIAC awards and finished as the school career record holder in total attacks and second in career kills.
Elsbernd led the Spartans to their fourth-straight Iowa Conference berth in 2014 after a fifth place finish and outside hitter Basierak secured her third, First Team All-IIAC honor and set the school record for most career kill attempts during the season.
In 2012, the program came off its best season since 2003, finishing in fourth place in the IIAC and receiving their second consecutive conference tournament berth. Outside hitter, Klaudia Basierak, received a First Team All-Iowa Conference honor and was chosen as the IIAC Freshman of the Year in 2012.
Prior to coaching at the University of Dubuque, Elsbernd spent one season as head coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa; and three seasons as an assistant coach under Jeff Meeker at Cornell College.
She attended and played collegiate volleyball at Coe College from 1999-2002 and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Public Relations and Speech Communications. She was a four-year letterwinner and earned Academic All-Iowa Conference honors in 2001 and 2002.
Elsbernd has experience coaching at numerous volleyball camps and clinics, and spent three years working with the USAV Iowa Region High Performance program, learning from and interacting with USA Volleyball coaches and USA Olympic Athletes.
In addition to her role as the head volleyball coach at UD, she is an instructor and serves as an advisor for the Spartans' Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Elsbernd graduated with a Master of Science degree in Sport Administration from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in 2007.
